A substantial and characterful antique stoneware tobacco jar (humidor) with a matching lid, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (Victorian/Edwardian period). This piece showcases a stunning, rich, glossy drip glaze in a captivating blend of treacle browns, ambers, and deep blues/blacks.
The cleverly designed lid features a central knob and three integrated indentations, making it a functional ashtray or pipe rest – a common feature in period tobacciana. While unmarked, the style and quality are indicative of traditional British potteries of the era.
Condition: Good antique condition. The exterior glaze is vibrant and largely free from chips or cracks. There is some internal staining and residue consistent with its age and original use for storing tobacco. Please see photos for details.
This tobacco jar is a fantastic find for collectors of tobacciana, antique pottery, or those seeking unique and decorative pieces with a rich history. Its dual function as a humidor and ashtray makes it particularly noteworthy.
